I mean, even Frodo himself has not even finished reading the series, despite beginning to film the iconic movies over twenty-five years ago. It just goes to show how committed the fans are when it comes to Middle-earth, and how many other fandoms simply pale in comparison. To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand LOTR.
The mixture of adoration and knowledge that LOTR obsessives have is accurately distilled in the phenomenon that is the gargantuan quantity of memes that they make about everything Tolkien. They have to be one of the earliest adopters of this now-inescapable genre that we can loosely define as internet humor, and they have not stopped over the decades that it has taken to develop it. If you think about it, that is almost as much of an innovation as inventing several different languages for the universe that you created.
